Our daughter will do anything Rachel tells her, so we are very excited by this DVD which helps teach her about her responsibilities around the house. We also love the story about rainbow salad, which we now make ourselves all the time!
I have to agree that there is significantly less signing in the entire series 2 DVD's. This is quite sad, as there are many things children learn passively and removing the number of signs make series 2 a disappointment.
After seeing the first series of Signing Time videos - all of which were outstanding, this one was really disappointing. There is a story time that takes up about a third of the video but the entire story only contains two or three signs. The rest is just Rachel talking. The focus seems to have shifted from teaching signing to highlighting Rachel.
Based on some of the reviews for the Series 2, I was a little skeptical about purchasing them. But I wanted to learn more, and we loved Series 1 and BST. So I dived in and started buying Series 2. I feel those reviews for Series 2 were a bit off base, but you can’t please everyone. Some of the reviews on this dvd stated there wasn’t many new signs. I would disagree, there is a good amount of new signs and less repeated signs. The one trend through Series 2 is that she uses one song throughout the dvd for the different segments. It is hard enough to write songs, so I think this was a good way to do it. Yes, I am always wanting to learn more and love more songs as well, but you try writing songs and see what you can do. Rachel does a lot, it isn’t all focused on her. Rachel started this new part throughout the series “What Time is it?” and it is a nice change of pace with Story Time, Counting Time, ABC Time, Game Time and Move/Groove Time. Some of those are a bit repetitive, but again most kids need that. I would agree the Story Time in this one missed the mark on signing. She could have done more with this one with many signs learned in Series 1 and Series 2. The only other critique that I have with Series 2, if I could be so bold, is she doesn’t sign as many words as she did in the other series. Like when she sings a song, before in BST & Series 1 she would sign all through it and now I have noticed that she only signs the words that you learn in the dvd. I feel that is a bit backwards since the kids that are watching this are probably older and would get more out of it, learning more signs verses when they were babies. Since repetition is good, then at least sign the words previously learned from the first series.
We have all the Baby Signing Times and all of the first series. We are very disappointed with the new ones... I bought the spring housecleaning set which has My House, My Things and this one... there are very few signs, and of the ones there are, most of them we knew already from previous Signing Time dvds. And instead of several songs per dvd there is one, that they just add a few new words to. Very expensive per sign taught, esp once you add in fedex shipping to Canada (they don't have most of the new DVDs on the "Canadian" site). I hope they rethink their approach... in this housecleaning dvd there could have been so many helpful new words... my 4 yr old son loves signing time and loves cleaning the house. We were both disappointed, and he has never asked to re-watch this dvd, unlike other signing time he cannot get enough of.
I am always impressed with Signing Time. The signs in this DVD are very helpful for my students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities! I really enjoyed the special features as well.
